Camp Morton November 4th 1861
To his Excellency Governor Morton
Sir
We the undersigned citizen soldiers of the State of Indiana humbly ???? your Excellency to hear this our petition; We have left our quite country homes and all we hold most dear as the call of your excellency to protect our beloved country from the traitors who threaten it with destruction. We came here with strong arms and willing minds ???, if necessary to lay down our lives in ??? good cause; we would be perfectly happy and contented but for one thing; and we humbly ???? good excellency to ??? in from being ??????? with this cause for discontent; nor for our sake alone, but for our country's sake also; ?? ???? ?? man with us, John P. Lunn, by name who is ?????, ?? force himself ???? us as our Captain and who has been asking Captain of our company since our arrival Camp Morton, in have held no ???? since our arrival here and we humbly ?? of you Excellency not to Commission this man as our Captain, for there is not one man in the Company who would vote for him if they had the privilege of voting, which right we claim as citizens of the United States. The man (John P. Lunn) is totally unfit for this position; and we beg of your Excellency not to send us into ??? ??? with such a man at the head of our company: Will your Excellency save us and thus ??? us and numerous friends of the company under lasting obligations?
